SARS spreads to France

The first case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), a killer disease which has caused at least 17 deaths worldwide, has been detected in a patient in France, health officials said Monday.

"It is the first case in France," a spokesman for the department of health (DGS) told AFP.

The infected man arrived in France on Sunday from Vietnam, where he is a medical worker at a French hospital in Hanoi, the official said.

Four staff members at the hospital have already died of SARS.

The man - who has not been named - was placed under medical care at a hospital in Tourcoing in northern France.

Eleven other people, who have recently returned from Asia and have displayed SARS symptoms, are under observation in France, the official said.

Passengers who travelled on the same flight as the man are being urged to contact their doctor if they develop a cough or breathing difficulties in the coming days.

The World Health Organisation said Monday there were 456 SARS cases from 13 countries and the Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong.

Ten deaths were reported in Hong Kong, four in Vietnam and three in Canada.
